Older and Wider by Jenny Eclair

The Blurb

'If you're after an in-depth medical or psychological insight into the menopause, I'm afraid you've opened the wrong book - I'm not a doctor . . . However, I am a woman and I do know how it feels to be menopausal, so this book is written from experience and the heart and I hope it makes you laugh and feel better.' JE

Older and Wider is Jenny Eclair's hilarious, irreverent and refreshingly honest compendium of the menopause. From C for Carb-loading and G for Getting Your Shit Together to I for Invisibility and V for Vaginas, Jenny's whistle-stop tour of the menopause in all its glory will make you realise that it really isn't just you. Jenny will share the surprising lessons she has learnt along the way as well as her hard-won tips on the joy of cardigans, dealing with the empty nest (get a lodger) and keeping the lid on the pressure cooker of your temper (count to twenty, ten is never enough).

As Jenny says, 'I can't say that I've emerged like a beautiful butterfly from some hideous old menopausal chrysalis and it would be a lie to say that I've found the 'old me' again. But what I have found is the 'new me' - and you know what? I'm completely cool with that.

Our Review

I was kindly given an advance copy of Older and Wider in exchange for an honest review and I have to say I loved it. I read it in the lead up to Christmas and I found it the perfect lockdown accompaniment. I met and elbow bumped Jenny last year at the RNA Romantic Novel Awards Ceremony in London, just before we were all locked away for the first time. She is an absolute delight and exactly like she is on the telly and her effervescent personality jumps out from every page. If you require an official medical diagnosis for the menopause then I maybe wouldn't rely on this but if you are going through it and need an empathetic voice in your ear just to say, "Yes I know it's horrible but guess what, you're not going through it on your own," then this is perfect. It's raw and painful at times but its also hilarious and the bit where Jenny tells us what she did in her pyjamas had me howling. Many of the symptoms of the menopause are mentioned and dealt with through humour and understanding and with lots of practical advice and tips to make the whole experience as comfortable as possible.

Overall it is light hearted, highly entertaining, hilarious, honest, caring and a must for any woman who is at the menopausal stage of her life. I loved it.

Me with Jenny at the Romantic Novel Awards 2020

Sincerely
